No-gi grappling in Southampton
No-gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling trained without the traditional jacket: just shorts and a rashguard. It’s faster and more athletic than the gi, built around control, wrestling and submissions rather than grips on the cloth. At MTHD in Swaythling, Southampton, our no-gi classes are open to every level, and you need no previous experience and no kit of your own to start.
What no-gi training is
Grappling, stripped back
No-gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without the jacket. With no cloth to grip, control comes from underhooks, body position and wrestling ties, so the pace is quicker and more athletic.
Wrestling and the leg game
Modern no-gi leans on wrestling entries, scrambles and the leg-lock game alongside classic positions, taught step-by-step, safely, and never rushed for beginners.
An easy place to start
Lots of people find no-gi the most natural way in, especially anyone from a wrestling, judo or MMA background. No gi to buy, nothing to feel self-conscious about.
Complete beginners to competitors
You don’t need any gi experience, or any grappling experience, to train no-gi with us. Beginner-friendly sessions start everyone from the basics: how to move, how to stay safe, and a few techniques at a time with a patient partner. More experienced grapplers and competitors train alongside, so there’s always room to grow. Here’s exactly what a first class looks like.
Keep it simple
- A fitted t-shirt or rashguard (nothing loose that fingers can catch)
- Shorts or leggings with no zips, pockets or buttons
- A water bottle and flip-flops for off the mat
- No gi ever needed for no-gi
When we train no-gi
No-gi runs throughout the week alongside our gi classes. See the full timetable and published prices, or read about training in the gi if you’d rather start there.
